This publication accompanies the exhibition 'British Art in the 20th Century' and continues the account of modern art initiated in 1985 with the enormously successful 'German Art in the 2oth Century'.
Britain's considerable contribution to the art of our century has never before been shown in such a comprehensive historical survey. Exhibition and catalogue trace currents in British Modernism - abstraction and painterly figuration - and their interplay over some seventy years. Beginning with the realism of Sickert and the Camden Town Group, this basically chronological account charts the pioneering abstraction of Wyndham Lewis and the Vorticists which was brought to an abrupt end by the First World War, itself recorded by a unique series of official commissions.
