Résumé : |
This exhibition traces the artistic production of Carrie Mae Weems, an Afro-American photographer who explores the use of different materials and means of expression multimedia installation, performance, and video and analyses how cultural, gender and class identity is forged. Her career offers a constant dialogue and reflection on the human condition, in which she proposes a critical approach to disciplines such as the history of art questioning and inverting its canons and architecture, in which power is used to represent (oneself).
A large proportion of the photographs serve to give visibility to the Afro-American community, and explore the role of this group in the construction of the history and identity of the United States. Weems aims to dismantle the existing stereotypes of this community, either through irony and sarcasm, or by recurring to a deliberate vehemence, but always insisting on the need to become involved, to take an active role in bringing about cultural, political and social transformation. The appropriation of the collective imagery and the inversion of the stereotypes deriving from this imagery is another of the aspects developed in her work. Her installations are liveable spaces where the artist invites viewers to reflect, through images and readings, her own printed texts, and through the words of writers such as Fannie Lou Hamer, Antonio Gramsci, Ntozake Shange, Gabriel García Márquez, Anton Chejov and Malcolm X. The exhibition presents 20 of her series, and includes over 100 large- and small-format photographs, digital impressions on cloth and coloured paper, audiovisual installations and videos. |
