Résumé :
|
White torture, also called clean torture, is a term used for methods of torture that aim to destroy the victim's psyche without leaving any traces. This catalogue documents a new group of works by the artist Gregor Schneider at Kunstsammlung Nordrhein - Westfalen K 21, Dusseldorf in 2007. A series of constructed, accessible rooms is inserted into the existing architecture of the museum: long corridors and narrow cells which remind the visitor equally of intensive-care units, spaces of protection and spaces of imprisonment. Individual rooms evoke prison cells, interrogation rooms, waiting zones and surveilled exercise yards. The artistic strategy of doubling which runs through Gregor Schneider's uvre is also employed here. The starting-point for this publication were images of the high-security US prison, Camp V, in Guantanamo Bay on Cuba that were circulated on the internet. Like a no man's land, Guantanamo tries to escape public scrutiny.
