Résumé : |
When asked, "What is the relation between sound and image in your work," Dean answered, "My interest resides in this gap between the sound and the image…I require sound to have its own autonomy." Thus, in opposition to an approach to cinema in which the viewer experiences a sense of identification with the spectacle, Dean creates a mode of apprehension in which the observer feels at odds with what she sees. While on the one hand, Dean points out that the slowness of her films enables the viewer to explore a single frame, she is also concerned with making clear the discontinuities of the cinematic experience. The slightly disjointed relationship between the sound and image, compounded by the clearly physical presence of the projector creates caesurae, which force the beholder to return to real-time, lived bodily experience rather than that of the cinematic.
Paula Carabell Wesley’s painting looks like nothing else out there. …the most conspicuous characteristics of his work from the seventies on—its insistent flatness, powdered pastel palette, cartoon/cinematographic narratives, embrace of the sexually charged encounter, sophisticated anthropomorphism, and mannered drawing—have enormous appeal amid a digital revolution that has provoked yet another rethinking of the medium. Linda Norden The last thing Demand wants to do is simulate reality. His pictures have no intention of deceiving viewers; rather, they give them the choice of taking part in the illusion themselves. Illusion is not an act of deception; it is play… In the case of Demand’s pictures, it acquires diversity by ceaselessly commuting between the imitation and the construction of reality. You can never quite tell what kind of reality prevails in these pictures: that of the represented or the representation itself or both at once? Andreas Ruby [parkettart.com] |
